Pope Benedict XVI has declared this year (October 2012 to November 2013) The Year of Faith.
This year is a great opportunity for Catholics across the world to grow in faith and to share their faith with others. And the year is just beginning.
How to Grow in Faith
If we are honest with ourselves, most of us want to grow in faith. Even if we are already faith-filled, we still want to grow more. Not only that, but we all have people in our lives that we would like to help to grow in faith too. The problem is we don’t always know how to do this, and we end up feeling stuck.
Feeling stuck can happen for many reasons. Here are just a few:
- we’re too busy and just don’t know how to fit “one more thing” into our busy lives
- we’re uncertain about which resources will really help us or our loved ones to grow in faith
- we often feel intimidated by the very tools that are supposed to help us grow in faith: the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church
Let’s look at these reasons a bit more closely.
Obstacles to Growing in Faith
We’re Too Busy
Life is busy. And for many of us adding “one more thing” seems impossible. There’s never enough time in the day. We are always on the go. Despite our best intentions, we sometimes can’t fit in a class or a seminar or a prayer meeting.
We’re Uncertain About Resources
There are so many Catholic books on the market. It’s not an easy task to know which ones will help us to grow in faith.
We Often Feel Intimidated
The two resources that we know will absolutely help us to grow in faith – the Bible and the Catechism – are often intimidating. How to start? Where to start? Yet these two bring us back to the very source of our Catholic Faith: Jesus Christ.
